How I Spend Time on the Air
Operating for me is a balance of curiosity, calm enjoyment, and the quiet satisfaction of making a good contact. I’m active on HF and VHF/UHF, with a particular interest in digital modes, portable operating, and the way radio connects people who might never otherwise meet. My operating is steady rather than competitive, shaped by the rhythm of daily life and the conditions of the bands.
Bands and Modes
I enjoy a mix of activity across the spectrum, choosing whatever suits the moment.
- HF CW, Phone and Digimodes
- Satellite both LEO and GEO
- VHF/UHF for local nets, portable work, and UKACS.
- Digital modes such as FT8 for their reach, efficiency, and ability to open the bands even when conditions are poor.
- SSB for the human voice and the sense of shared presence it brings.
- CW remains an aspiration — a skill I continue to explore slowly and without pressure.
Each mode offers something different: the immediacy of voice, the precision of digital, the challenge of propagation, and the simple pleasure of hearing a distant signal rise out of the noise.
Operating Style
My approach to operating is unhurried and reflective.
- Casual listening.
- Portable operating, where a simple antenna and a quiet location can be surprisingly effective.
- Digital activity, particularly when conditions are marginal.
- Local nets and Activity Sessions
I keep a paper and electronic logbook and enjoy watching the map of contacts slowly grow over time.
Logbook and Activity
I maintain logs through QRZ, LOTW, EQSL and other platforms, and I enjoy reviewing the patterns that emerge — the countries reached, the bands that open unexpectedly, and the small milestones that mark progress.
Awards are not my main focus, but I appreciate the structure they bring and the sense of continuity they offer.
What Operating Means to Me
Operating is more than making contacts. It is a way of staying connected to a wider community, of learning continuously, and of contributing where I can. Whether I’m working HF from home, checking in on a local net, or experimenting with a portable setup, radio remains a space of calm, curiosity, and service.
